Morning Habits for a healthy, happy day

The way you begin your morning can either make or break your entire day. Here are some tips to help you avoid waking up on the wrong side of the metaphorical bed!

  • Wake up earlier than usual

This is important to get your day started in the best way possible- Especially if you have an office to head off to. Nothing is fun when you have to do it in a mad rush, and getting ready for work is no exception. This way, you have already started your day off with stress.

It has been proven that waking up earlier can contribute to a much happier, smoother day. So, set your alarm clock for at least a half hour earlier than what you usually would, but a full hour is even better. This way, you have time to wake up and greet the new day at your own pace. No more skidding out of the shower and fumbling desperately for an outfit as you nervously watch the minutes tick on by!

Take some time for yourself to enjoy your favorite morning drink, whether that be tea, coffee or fresh juice. Waking up a little earlier allows you the luxury of doing this.

  • Think positive thoughts

While you are sipping on your beverage of choice, fill your mind with positive vibes! Psychologists have proven that starting your day with positive, happy thoughts will greatly improve your overall mood, and leave you in a better state of mind to tackle your day head on.Think about all the little things you have to be grateful for, the people or the places that make you happy. Listening to some music that makes you happy and gets you in the mood for an epic day works wonders as well. Just remember to keep the volume on low or use headphones if you live in a block of flats- you don’t want any angry neighbors banging your door down because you woke them from their sweet slumber!

  • Peppermint Essential Oil

Sounds random, I know, but Peppermint Essential Oil has been proven to be as powerful as coffee in giving you that morning boost you need to get your mind working. Simply sniffing the bottle or adding a few drops to an Oil Burner will lift your spirits and have you feeling cool, calm and collected as you go about getting ready.

  • Some light exercise

Try to get in at least a few minutes of light exercise to get your blood flowing. Even a few stretches will do wonders to prepare you for the day. If you are into Yoga, a Sun Salutation is the ultimate way to greet the morning.

A walk along the beach, if you live in an area that allows it, is also good morning gold! Nothing will have you feeling more amped for life than some fresh ocean air and a breath-taking sun rise! This is an awesome way to get your day started when your time allows it, and you can combine your morning drink (just bring it along in a flask), positive vibes and light exercise into one.

  • Breakfast

Breakfast is said to be the most important meal of the day. This is because it is literally the fuel that gets your engine running. Don’t skip breakfast, and you will notice you are able to function far more productively and happily.

Experts recommend to keep the breakfast light and as healthy as possible. Big, greasy breakfasts (while certainly gastronomically satisfying) can leave you feeling sluggish and more like you want to take a nap than head on out. Muesli, Yogurt and fresh fruit is perfect for a morning meal, especially if you are someone who battles to work up an appetite early in the early hours. As is some fresh sliced Avo on Toasted Rye.

You can also have a go at a breakfast smoothie if you have the necessary equipment. Here is a recipe to a delicious, protein packed breakfast smoothie that is one of my personal favorites:

Although, you can find literally endless recipes online that fit your taste.

  • Set your daily goals

Take a few minutes to mentally note what you would like to achieve that day. Whether it is getting errands done or resolving an issue you have been having at work, think about how best to go about doing it so that you have a solid plan. This will help to alleviate some of the stress and get you focused. If you are the type of person who loves lists (Sheldon Cooper, is that you??) make a to-do-list to get your day organised. And off you go. As the day goes on, you will notice how much more awake, alert and refreshed you feel, and how much easier it was to deal with any challenges that happened to come your way. Starting your day off in a relaxed and positive way is the key to a happier, healthier day.
