The greatest, cheapest and crunchiest party favours!
Step 1: wash 6-8 Granny Smith apples, dry thoroughly and remove stalks.
Step 2: insert a bamboo skewer securely into the stalk end of each apple. Line a baking tray with greaseproof paper and fill a large bowl with iced water.
Step 3: place 3 Tbsp (45ml) salted butter, 2 Tbsp (30ml) water, 1 Tbsp (30ml) vinegar, 1/4 cup (60ml) golden syrup and 2 cups (500ml) white sugar in a saucepan. Simmer until mixture begins to boil. Brush crystals from the side of the saucepan with a wet pastry brush.
Step 4: cover with a lid and boil for a minute. Remove lid and cook rapidly for 10 minutes or until mixture turns golden. Add 2 tsp (10ml) red food colouring.
Step 5: stand pan in a basin of boiling water to prevent setting. Dip apples and twist to coat in toffee. Plunge immediately into cold water to harden. Transfer toffee apples to a greased baking tray to set.
