The 2018 FIFA World Cup Begins

It might seem like a short time ago, even though it’s been eight years, when South Africa was chosen to host one the most prestigious and entertaining events in the world, The FIFA World Cup. This year the tournament will be held in Russia and the 2018 World Cup is now upon us.

For the next month, countries from all around the world will go head to head in an attempt to become the soccer champions of 2018. From big team names such as Spain, Brazil, England, Germany and France to newcomers like Iceland and Panama.

We’re currently still in the group stages of the tournament so it’s still to early to make any definite predictions but even though it only just began on Thursday, we’ve been thrown quite a few curveballs (pardon the baseball reference).

In only a few days we’ve seen the big teams mentioned above have some unexpected setbacks. Spain drew against Portugal 3-3, with Cristiano Rolando scoring all of them to get a hat rick. Germany was upset by Mexico and not only did Argentina draw with newcomers Iceland but Lionel Messi, arguably the best soccer player in the world, missed a penalty shot.

If this is what happens in under a week of this World Cup, then it’s not a stretch to say that 2018 will be a memorable year for soccer fans everywhere.
