Long Distance Relationships – Do They Work?

Movies make long distance relationships look like one of the greatest things in the world. The couple face many problems but in the end, their love is able to overcome it and they live happily ever after. Sadly, this is not always the case in real life.

When you begin a new relationship, you feel like you’re on cloud 9. You feel happy, excited, giddy and every other good feeling there is. The truth is that long distance relationships are hard work and don’t always work out. For a relationship to actually work, both individuals need to experience real life hardships. How they respond to those hardships determines how strong the relationship really is. Because of the distance in a long distance relationship, you are not able to fully achieve this.

Another problem is the lack of interaction. Yes technology has made it much easier to keep in contact but it is not the same. Humans naturally crave physical contact with others, especially in a relationship. Not physically being together may put a strain on the relationship.

Then there’s technology itself. It’s easy to talk to someone over the phone or through text messages when you can’t see the person, but actually being in each other’s presence is another thing. If you get used to not seeing a person for long periods of time, it might get awkward when the time comes for you to see them every single day of your life.

Another problem is trust. Because you are not able to see your significant other all the time, you might find yourself questioning if they are being faithful to you. As a result you may find yourself stalking them on social media or continuously asking people they know to see what they are doing or who they are doing it with. This is definitely not healthy as trust is one of the most important aspects of a relationship.

These are all problems that you must be willing to face when considering entering a long distance relationship. However, there might be some cases where long distance relationships do work. This can be done if both individuals are 100% committed to each other and put in a great amount of work to be together. They must be willing to trust each other and try to visit each other as much as possible as physical interaction will help. Just like in the movies, love can conquer all, but it takes dedication. The key to making it work is to put in the effort. It all depends on how important the person is to you. If you truly are in it for the long haul, then you can definitely make it work.
