The Great Laurel vs Yanny Debate

If you haven’t heard the famous audio clip that has swept the world then you must be living under a rock. Remember back in 2015 when the picture of a dress popped up and had people debating whether it was white and gold or blue and black? In 2018 we have the audio clip that has us debating whether it is Laurel or Yanny.

It’s baffling that people can hear two very different words and are each so convinced that they are hearing it right. A poll done based on Twitter data saw that 53% of people claimed to hear Laurel and 47% heard yanny. This debate seems rival the intensity of Team Edward vs Team Jacob. So what does the clip say? is team Laurel right or is Team Yanny?

The answer is obviously Laurel. Despite people claiming to hear Yanny, it was revealed that the audio clip is from Vocabulary.com and serves a feature to hear the pronunciation of the word laurel. Not the name Laurel, but the word laurel that means a wreath worn on the head in a symbol of victory.

An explanation on why some people are hearing Yanny is that they are able to hear  things at a higher frequency. It could also depend on  the device you are hearing it from or based on your surroundings at the time. Whatever the reason, it’s still pretty weird.
