The 2017 Video and Music Awards

Last Sunday was the 2017 MTV Video and Music Awards (VMA’s), a night that celebrates musical artists everywhere. This year’s awards were hosted by Katy Perry and had a line-up of amazing musical performances.

This year, changes were made to the show as MTV decided to get rid of gender specific categories just like at this year’s MTV Movie and TV Awards. All artists were grouped into one category and even the iconic Moonman trophy has been renamed to Moon Person.

The show kicked off with an amazing performance by Kendrick Lamar, who dominated the awards with 8 nominees and 6 wins including the biggest award of the night, Video of the Year.  The artist also won awards for Best Hip Hop, Best Cinematography, Best Direction, Best Art Direction and Best Visual Effects

Other performances included Ed Sheeran, Julia Michaels, Fifth Harmony, Lorde, Shawn Mendes, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Alessia Cara, James Arthur, Kyle, Logic, Khalid, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Travis Scott, Rod Stewart, DNCE, with a closing performance by Katy Perry featuring Nicki Minaj.

Pink put on an amazing performance with a medley of some of her greatest songs and was awarded the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

Here is a list of the other winners for this year’s awards:

Artist of the Year- Ed Sheeran

Best New Artist – Khalid

Best Collaboration – Zayn and Taylor Swift- I Don’t Wanna Live Forever

Best Pop – Fifth Harmony – Down

Best Choreography – Kanye West – Fade

Best Rock – 21 Pilots – Heavydirtysoul

Best Dance – Zedd and Alessia Cara – Stay

Best Editing – Young Thug – Wyclef Jean

Song of the Summer – Lil Uzi Vert – XO Tour Llif3

Best Fight Against the System – Alessia Cara, Logic, The Hamilton Mixtape, Big Sean Taboo and John Legend.

My personal Best Moment of the Show: When DJ Khalid took his adorable son, Asahd, on stage with him for a segment with Katy Perry.

Worst Moment: The VMA’s received some backlash for this one. When Jared Leto introduced a video of Linkin Park to pay tribute to the late Chester Bennington, it was cut of halfway through, much to fans outrage.
