Inxeba (The wound)-Swept at the 2018 SAFTAs

The critically acclaimed drama is an exploration of tradition and sexuality set amid the Xhosa rites of passage into manhood.

The controversial drama stunned critics when it swept the boards in the film categories during the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTA) held in Sun City.  Inxeba producers were beaming after the once-banned film lifted the gold horns for Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor (Nakhane) and Best Supporting Actor (Bongile Mantsai).

Inxeba became the target of protests by Xhosa men angry about its subject matter. It was the subject of an appeal at the Film and Publication Board, where it was rated as porn and effectively banned. Nakhane thanked the critics and those that disliked the show for starting a conversation that needed to be started.

Since its world premiere at Sundance, Inxeba has collected more than 18 International Awards. Most recently it was awarded Best Foreign Language Film of 2017 by the African American Film Critics Association
