Feel the winds of winter. No. Not the coming cold front but the long awaited new season of Game of Thrones. The HBO show, which had its LA premiere this past Thursday night, is set to air the first episode of Season 7 this Sunday, with South Africans getting to watch said episode the following Monday evening on Mnet.
The show, which is solely based on George RR Martin’s book series A Song of Ice and Fire, is one of the most watched shows of all time and has grown a very strong following. It’s been more than a year since the Season 6 finale and the most dedicated fans have been counting down to July 16th.
The seventh season has been widely anticipated due to story arcs coming full circle. The true parental lineage of fan favourite Jon Snow (played by Kit Harrington) was revealed last season and this will certainly play a big part in the new season. The white walkers, who are the true antagonists of the series, despite what the battle for the throne would have one believe, and their army of the undead have begun their journey into the land of the living. Across the narrow sea, Daenerys Tagaryan (played by Emilia Clarke), whose father held the Iron Throne before he died, has finally begun her voyage back to Westeros with a large army, ships and a desire to reclaim the throne. A throne which is currently held by the ruthless Cersei Lannister (played by Lena Headey).
Season 7 will consist of only seven episodes which is less than the previous seasons that each had ten episodes respectively. The show is scheduled to end on its ninth season which is sure to leave diehard fans feeling empty. Nonetheless they need not think about that now because winter is finally here.
