Durban Hit by Massive Storm

Last Tuesday Durban was ravaged by a massive storm that hit the coastline. Durban residents were warned to remain indoors until it passed as the storm caused much damages in several parts of Durban.

Durban resident, Nivern Chetty, who was travelling from Durban to Galleria, gave a eye witness account of the storm.  “I got to the top of the hill just before Galleria on the south bound side when it started to rain and the wind started to pick up. Within literally thirty seconds to a minute, visibility dropped to almost zero, you could barley see a meter in front of you. The wind and rain got so heavy that cars basically came to a stop on the freeway and just before the Umbogintwini off ramp the road started to flood.”

“The storm continued to batter down for 45 minutes so I sat in my car in the middle of the free way from 8:30 to about 9:30. In between waiting obviously I sent a few videos to a couple of friends to show them the extent of the storm and it was howling, wind was batting against the car.”

As for the damages caused during the storm, Chetty said the rain caused a couple of buildings to flood in Southgate Industrial Park, cars with buckled rims and popped tires and counted 43 vehicles that were stranded all over the freeway waiting for recovery.

Chetty provided the following video.

Liezel Smith, who was holidaying in Durban at the time reported seeing heavy rains, very strong winds and strong seas as well as lots of trees blown over, house roofs blown of by the winds and flooded roads.

Smith provided the following video.
