Don’t know what poké (pronounced POH-kay) is? Well with the way this lovely foodie bowl is going that is bound to change soon. It originates in Hawaii but since it’s incredible popularity has become a global phenomenon. Even so replacing the traditional sushi and serving it in a bowl with various delicious ingredients!
But what exactly is in these delicious bowls that are causing such hype today, Poké usually will consist of a mix of raw cubes of seafood most likely salmon or tuna that has been marinated in a unique soy sauce-based marinade. It is often garnished with various healthy and tasty ingredients like seaweed, cucumber, avocado, pickled ginger or tobiko and served over rice, noodles or fresh greens. It is basically deconstructed version of sushi however instead of tiny pieces of rice covered raw fish, it’s a bowl filled with so much more! It has similar flavor profiles to sushi, but is served in a more convenient way.
It is generally known to be a very healthy meal, with endless ways of customizing it and definitely a pretty sight. (Great if you want to change from the usual Instagram selfie!)
According to Chung Chow executive chef whom co-owns Noreetuh, a Hawaiian-inspired New York restaurant, explained, “When sushi became popular in the 1980s,” Chung said, “people didn’t eat raw fish. But now people are more accepting of it and are seeking it out.”
