Why we can’t wait for ‘Atomic Blonde’ to hit South African theatres.

This action-filled movie, starring our very own Charlize Theron, is making waves in the movie world for all the right reasons. Atomic blonde had its world premiere on March 12, 2017 and with a budget of $30 million (R404 439 000), it has grossed approximately $61 million (R822 359 300) worldwide thus far. This novel-based thriller, set in late 1980’s Berlin, tells the story of  an undercover MI6 agent, Lorraine Broughton, that’s sent to investigate the murder of a fellow agent and recover a missing list of double agents. The movie promises a visually vivid, seductive, pulsing thriller with a whole lot of action. Ratings for the movie has also been great, with a 76% from Rotten tomatoes and 7,2/10 from IMDb. But what we’re most excited for about this movie, is the fact that It’s breaking barriers in the film industry surrounding female-led roles in action movies. Although this isn’t a new thing, it is indeed a very rare thing.

During Entertainment Weekly’s Women Who Kick Ass panel at San Diego Comic Con, Charlize said, ‘When a story doesn’t quite work I find that the female characters in the movie will always be the ones that are used to then emotionally manipulate in a way that men don’t get used. We might not be thought as warriors, so we need a reason to become a warrior, and I really have a problem with that because we really are warriors and it’s time for us to be shown that way.’ We couldn’t agree more with Charlize. Females are powerful. We can be the heroes of our own stories. Thank you Hollywood for realising this. Also, let’s not forget the very successful movie, Wonder Woman that ultimately created this female heroism craze and teaches our young girls this very important thing. Other female-led action movies to also hit the cinema include Taraji P Henson in Proud Mary and Jennifer Lawrence in Red Sparrow and we can’t wait to see these strong female actresses in action.

Atomic Blonde will be released on Friday 25 August in South Africa and we’re definitely saving the date.
