Big, fat, thick, phat, BBW, curvy; whatever rocks your boat honey.
In case you haven’t noticed, women on the big side of life are tearing down stereotypical boundaries and attacking their insecurities head on. For many years, society and the media has not only been harsh to heavier women but they have totally disregarded their beauty and placed them on the side line and made it almost impossible for them to realise the beauty there is to find in all the flabs, cellulites and stretch marks.
The struggle of acceptance in the “big girl” community is one which dates back to the 19th century, when the uniquely shaped Sara Baartman was exhibited and ridiculed as a freak show attraction in Europe, being referred to as “Hottentot Venus”. The scrutiny carried on for centuries until the year 2007 when the film Hairspray premiered. A movie about a young curvy lady who endure prejudice due to her dress size, however overcame the odds by rising above the judgements. That cleared out a whole new avanue for the curvy nation.
Presently, there are fashion outlets which cater of thick women, we enjoy the pleasure of seeing plus sized women on publications and on the runway and what’s more liberating is the shift in what the media depicts as beautiful and acceptable and the world became more receptive of curves.
Big has always been beautiful and will continue to be.
