Music is a powerful thing. It is a global phenomenon that reaches all parts of the world. Just like the world has different people, races, religions and lifestyles, music has different sounds, beats, genres and compositions. It is that reason that it is like a language that is shared by all.
While music isn’t an actual language, it has the power to connect us in a way a language never can. It is a form of expression from one person to another, allowing us to make our own interpretations. Every culture around the world has it’s own type of music and even if you aren’t apart of that culture, you can be connected to it through the music.
Everyone has the ability to create music themselves. Whether it’s through playing instruments or writing songs or even singing along to your favourite song, you are creating music. It’s something that comes naturally, without practise.
Music is universal because it is the one thing that everyone knows and understand. When attending a concert, it doesn’t matter if the people around you are complete strangers, everyone there is there for the same reason, to enjoy the music and that alone makes you feel like you aren’t stranger’s.
Take last year’s hit song Despacito. It’s a Spanish song, a language that isn’t spoken by everyone. While it was written in a language not known by all, that didn’t stop it from becoming one of the biggest songs of the year. Some people may not have known what the song meant, but it was enjoyed by all none the less.
Music can bridge the gap that separates people and transcends the things that separate us like distance. It’s heard around the world by everyone. So the next time a great song comes on and you’re singing along to it, take the time and remember that somewhere in the world there is someone doing the exact sascathing thing and that is true power.
