She’s a well known TV Presenter, Blogger and Radio Personality, but one of Liezel van der Westhuizen’s greatest achievements is becoming “mom” to two adopted fur-babies.
Being a voice for South Africa’s homeless animals is something Liezel takes great pride in. She encourages everyone to open their hearts and their homes, and give South Africa’s homeless animals, their ‘forever home’.
“There are so many animals in need of homes, by adopting a pet, you are giving it a second chance. The most common reasons animals are surrendered is because of a change in circumstances of their family, either a divorce or a move.” Liezel says.
It all began with Leia, Liezel’s Dachsund Cross, who completely stole her heart. But it was her recent adoption of Luke (18 months) that reinforced Liezel’s will to adopt and spread the word on the importance of animal adoption.
“My first dog Leia is a Dachshund cross and I was looking to adopt another similar size dog who is energetic as her. My mom sent me a link to Cape Dachshund rescue website and thats where I found Luke. Luke and Leia are active dogs and often join me for short runs on Table Mountain.” Liezel says.

Liezel describes Luke & Leia as “inseparable”, and tells us that she “can’t imagine what life was like before Luke. Leia and Luke get on so well, but in the beginning Leia just ignored him. Now they are family.” She concludes.

When asked about what important message Liezel would want people to know about adopting. She answers, “By adopting an animal, you are assisting against the fight to stop Puppy Mills (factory-style breeding facilities that put profit above the welfare of dogs). I also assist with those living on the streets who own dogs, by dropping off food for both dog and owner as well as assisting with any vet care for their pet and I want to encourage everyone to try do the same.”
Whilst Liezel is based in Cape Town, she wants her voice to be heard all around South Africa, and she calls upon the public to make a difference, educate those around you, as well as offering animals a forever home if you are able to. “There are so many abandoned and abused animals, and in Cape Town it’s fanatastic to see all the animal adoption agencies who are making their voices heard on behalf of these fur-children. Stand together and let’s help the voiceless.“
