When I asked some friends of mine what it meant to have a sibling, their answers ranged from, “Someone you can rely on” to “Someone who can get on your nerves” to “Someone who will always be there for you.” In my experience, all these are true.
When you’re younger, growing up with a sibling can be like a roller-coaster ride. One minute you will be getting on like a house on fire and the next you can be at each other’s troths. It’s a relationship that comes with good times and bad. When you constantly see someone every single day, it can be easy to get annoyed over the simplest of things. However, no matter how small or big a fight can be, you can never really stay angry for long.
There are many great parts to having siblings. If you are lucky enough to have a close bond with your sibling, then you already know all of this. To those who aren’t close to their siblings, here’s what you’re missing out on.
Someone who will always understand you
A sibling is supposed to be someone who understands you and all your quirks. I can honestly say that my sister is my best friend. She knows me better than I know myself and vice versa. Sometimes it feels like she can read my mind.
Someone to play with
When you’re a kid the best playtime is when you play with someone else. From hide and seek to a board game, your sibling can always be your player number 2.
Someone to support you
When you need someone to talk to, they will be there to lend an ear. If you’re ever sad, they will be the shoulder you can cry on. If you have good news, they will be one of the first in line to celebrate with you.
Someone to do favours for you
I love my little sister, but I also love asking her to do things that I’m just too lazy to do myself. All it takes is a promise of something with chocolate in it and it’s a done deal.
Someone you can do great things with
Just look at some famous siblings that did such great things together. Like the Grimm Brothers who wrote tons of fairy-tale stories that have become a part of our pop culture, or even the Wright Brothers who made the first ever airplane. Who knows, maybe you and your sibling can create something amazing together.
Someone you can share your clothes with
Love that new outfit your sibling just bought? You can just borrow it in exchange for lending them one of yours. Everyone is happy.
Siblings are connected through blood. Just like that can’t be broken, the bond they share can’t be broken either. Or at least if you don’t let it. Like the saying goes, you can choose your friends but you can’t choose your family. However a sibling can be both family and a friend.
