‘The TKO’ is showcased every Friday evening at 10:30pm on SABC 2 and they’ve introduced a new host, none other than sporting guru, Romy Titus.
Romy was introduced as the first ever female host and believes she will bring her own personality and insight to the show.
“I bring me… I’ve not done boxing presenting before and although exposed to the sport, it’s the first time I host it. It’s a steep learning curve but I’m happily embracing it and learning so much as I go along about what life was like during apartheid and how the sport was governed, then to today, and how it has evolved, changed and embraced female boxers. I’m in 7th heaven. “she says.
The show was originally launched in June 2015 when Government, Boxing South Africa and the public broadcaster came together to bring boxing back after it was off air for almost 3 years. The show sees Romy travelling to live boxing fights staged by different promoters all over the country which is exciting and offers a whole new take on her sporting views.
Romy is joined by 2 analyst’s on the show who each add specific flavour. Colin Nathan, a boxing trainer and gym owner and Bongani Magasela, a sports Journalist specializing in boxing.
“Bra Bongz as we call him is serious about the sport and what it has to offer, he also has appreciation for where it all started and so he is like my encyclopedia. Colin is the joker, but his knowledge of what happens ringside and in the ring is invaluable.” She adds.
Romy dedicated her first to show to her grandpa who was an amateur boxer, losing only two fights, and fought for Peninsula Harriers Amateur Boxing Club.
The show will act as a platform for boxers to speak up. In Romy’s opinion, Boxing has gone on for years unnoticed and now it has it’s voice back on SABC.
“The show highlights women’s boxing with about 60 pro-boxers in the country at the moment – and its rapidly growing. It’s about starting at grass-root level and teaching the sport and its fundamentals. It’s not about beating up your opponent but about the mental part of the game and discipline to.” Romy explains.
The show is filled with the right combination of articulate analysts with great insight and knowledge of South African and international boxing and boxers, and it unpacks the intricacies of the game for the viewers.
“Why do we call it a ring when it’s a square? LOL!” Romy jokes.
Be sure to tune in to #TheTKO which airs every Friday at 10:30pm on SABC 2.
