Exclusive: Behind the Music with J Something

Having given us one great musical hit after another , Mi Casa has earned it’s place as one of our country’s best music groups. Since their debut in 2011 the group has become widely popular, nominated for several music awards. Front man of the group, J Something, was born in Portugal and later moved to South Africa. He worked as a studio manager at Soul Candi in Johannesburg and began working on his music. He is a multi talented vocalist, guitarist and cook. In an exclusive interview with The Eagle, we get to know him a little better.

Where did the name J Something come from?

 J: My name is Joao Fonseca, so people couldn’t pronounce it so I just made it J …. Something.  

How did you meet Mo-T and Dr. Duda?

J: We met on a rooftop in Sanding Johannesburg. Dr.Duda was dj’ing at this party I was attending and I asked him if I could sing and we just got freestyling without knowing one another from a bar of soap. Since then we have never looked back 🙂

How would you describe your relationship with them?

J: We are musicians who have become close friends through music. It’s a weird relationship that is and has always been grounded in our passion for music.  

What song of yours is your favorite and why?

J: Its always a tricky question, I love the music we make. Right now I’m vining with Nana.  

Who is your favorite artist/group?

J: Too broad of a question for a person who is as passionate about music as I am. My favorite album at the moment is by Children of Zeus, its called The Story So far …  

What inspires you when creating new music?

J: Pretty much my current situation, and my surroundings.  

What’s the best part about going on tour?

J: Getting to travel is such a blessing. Your eyes are opened to new cultures and that is what makes us better human beings. I also love eating different foods.  

Where was your favourite place that you performed?

J: I have been privileged to perform in many cities around the world but recently we filled up Scala in London and that was a pretty dope feeling.  

What are some of your favorite things to do during your down time?

J: Cook. Fifa. Family.  

Where did your love of cooking come from?

J: My love of cooking stems from my culture which is Portuguese. Food plays an integral role to our culture. My mother is an incredible cook and I learnt a lot from her as well as my late father who was an incredible food and beverage manager for many hotels around the world.  

What made you decide to open Something’s Cooking by J?

J: Sun International did They were the pioneers for this. It was always something I had thought of doing.
